Rockets hit Israel as Gaza siege continues

Sun, 01 Feb 2009 06:49:24 GMT | PressTV

Two Palestinian Qassam-type rockets fired from the besieged Gaza Strip have hit western Israel's Negev, according to Israeli media reports.

The two rockets were launched at around 6:50 am. One landed in the Sdot Negev Regional Council and the other hit the Eshkol Regional Council. There were no reports of injuries or damage.

On Saturday morning, a Grad rocket exploded in an open area south of Ashkelon. There were no injuries in this incident as well, according Israeli media.

Israel says the Palestinians have fired at least five rockets since the end of the war in Gaza on January 18.

Palestinians fire rockets from the blockaded strip in protest to an 18-month Israeli blockade on Gaza as the humanitarian situation in the impoverished strip with over 1.1 million residents is at its worst.

In spite of the international calls for lifting the Israeli siege the regime has refused to open the crossings into the Gaza Strip.

Israeli three-week military operation on strip has exacerbated the already dire humanitarian crisis by destroying civilian infrastructure during the invasion.

The hospitals and other medical facilities suffer from severe shortages of medical supplies and electricity. The crossings into the Gaza Strip still remain closed and the humanitarian aid permitted to enter the besieged strip is below the survival levels.

Nearly 5,000 houses were destroyed and hundreds of people have become homeless.
