The convoy of 100 vehicles of humanitarian aid is heading for the Gaza Strip. |
Algeria and Morocco have opened their border for the first time in 15 years allowing a Gaza-bound humanitarian convoy to pass through.
The border crossing was opened for the first time since 1994, letting a convoy of 100 vehicles with 315 drivers to pass the border on its way to the besieged Gaza Strip.
The Algerian-Moroccan border was closed in 1994 after an attack on a hotel in Marrakech. Rabat accused Algerian secret services of masterminding the attack.
The convoy which has been organized by a UK-based umbrella body called 'Viva Palestine', left London last week, traveling through France, Spain and North Africa, to cross from Egypt into Gaza through the Rafah border-crossing in early March.
Yvonne Ridley, a Press TV presenter and political analyst, with film-maker Hassan al Banna Ghani are traveling with the convoy and making a documentary recording the journey.
The Gaza Strip has been under a tight Israeli blockade which has not been lifted in 19 months, even during Tel Aviv's three-week-long all-out war against the territory.
