Samira Ahmed Jassim is seen in a detention facility in Baghdad. |
An Iraqi woman who was arrested recently has confessed to recruiting women for suicide bombings, training them, and leading them to their targets.
A confession on video was shown to reporters in Baghdad on Tuesday in which she confessed to how she would persuade the women to be bombers, then escort them to an orchard for insurgent training, and then finally lead them to their targets.
Identified as Samira Ahmed Jassim, popularly known as Umm al-Mumineen or "the mother of believers", is said to have recruited more than 80 female suicide bombers and has confessed to masterminding 29 bombings in different locations in the country, Iraqi military spokesman Major General Qassim al-Moussawi said.
He added that her arrest in January dealt a major blow to one of the most effective forms of attack in Iraq.
Iraqi women are often allowed to pass through male-guarded US-Iraqi military checkpoints without being searched, dressed in flowing black robes, which makes it easier to hide explosives belts.
