Erdogan becomes honorary Tehran citizen

Mon, 02 Feb 2009 17:00:30 GMT | PressTV

Turkish prime minister,
Recep Tayyip Erdogan
Tehran Mayor Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf has given honorary citizenship of the Iranian capital to Turkish Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

In a letter to the Turkish prime minister, Qalibaf praised Erdogan for his Davos remarks, describing it as a wise and courageous act.

Erdogan marched off the stage in front of Israeli President Shimon Peres and UN chief Ban Ki-moon, after saying that Israel committed "barbarian" acts in Gaza, and lashing out at the audience for applauding Peres's remarks made in defense of the war. He vowed he would never return to Davos.

“While many states have kept silent on the Israeli crimes committed during the war on Gaza, the people of Turkey should be proud of their courageous leader,” reads Qalibaf's letter.

The war in Gaza left at least 1,330 Palestinians dead and thousands of others wounded. Israel lost 10 soldiers in the fighting and three Israeli civilians were killed by Hamas rockets.
