Report: Peres will task Netanyahu to form governmentt

Thu, 12 Feb 2009 01:23:38 GMT | PressTV

Benjamin Netanyahu will reportedly be tasked to
form a government.
Israeli President Shimon Peres will reportedly task Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu to form the new government, political sources say.

"Tzipi Livni should consider sitting in the opposition and attacking the Likud's policy, and within a year-and-a-half Kadima will lead the country," a Kadima party official was quoted by Ynet as saying on Wednesday.

Netanyahu had earlier rejected the idea of power sharing with Kadima.

The Likud leader met with Yisrael Beiteinu, Chairman Avigdor Lieberman and Shas leader Eli Yishai to discuss forming a coalition with the right wing parties.

Although Lieberman has declined to comment about the candidate he recommended to Peres, political sources said the Yisrael Beiteinu Leader has already clinched a deal with Netanyahu.

Senior Likud officials, however, said they are concerned that Lieberman may betray Netanyahu to gain a share in power.

Both Kadima and Likud claimed victory in the Israeli elections amid exchange of accusations between rival factions.
