Acting Palestinian Authority chief Mahmoud Abbas |
The acting Palestinian Authority chief says the world should recognize a possible national unity government that would include Hamas.
Mahmoud Abbas said in a press conference on Tuesday in Norway that if the Palestinians form a national unity government that includes the Hamas movement, the international community should recognize it, the Maan News Agency reported.
Abbas described the recognition of a unity government as essential in resolving the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, the International Middle East Media Center reported.
He also expressed hope that the Palestinian internal meeting scheduled to be held on February 26th in Egypt would recognize all peace deals signed between Israel and the Palestinian Liberation Organization.
Tensions between Hamas and Fatah began after Hamas' victory in the 2006 parliamentary elections. Following the elections, Mahmoud Abbas dissolved the democratically elected Hamas government and appointed a Fatah-led Palestinian Authority in the West Bank.
