Israel grappling with power struggle

Thu, 19 Feb 2009 00:25:13 GMT | PressTV

Israel is struggling with uncertainty with rival factions trying to persuade President Shimon Peres to task their leaders with forming a cabinet.

Peres on Wednesday started consultations with Knesset members on choosing a candidate who will be mandated to form the government.

Likud representatives insisted that only the party's leader Benjamin Netanyahu had a chance to succeed with forming a government, Ynet reported.

"There is only one person who has a chance to form a government, and that's Benjamin Netanyahu," Knesset Member Gideon Sa'ar told Peres. "There is no mathematical possibility, even on paper, for Livni to form a government."

MK Silvan Shalom also urged Peres to task pick Netanyahu, "in order to prevent needless waste of time and instability."

However, Kadima representatives said that if Foreign Minister, Tzipi Livni, was not appointed as prime minister, the people's will would not be respected.

"The people decided that Kadima would lead the next government," Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz said.

Mofaz told Peres that a "Livni-led government would unite the nation."

Israel has been struggling with a political vacuum since the uncertain results of elections left the country in a political limbo on Feb.10.

Both Kadima and its rival Likud claim victory in the elections. Livni, who is the leader of Kadima, failed to form a coalition after she was tasked to do so last year.
