Former Egyptian MP arrested on Gaza border

The Rafah
border crossing
An official of the banned Labor Party of Egypt is arrested as he shows up at the Egyptian-Gaza border crossing in Rafah without a passport.

A security official on the Egyptian side of the border, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not allowed to speak to the press, said Magdi Ahmed Hussein has been arrested for allegedly using an underground tunnel to sneak into Gaza.

The party confirmed his arrest on its Web site but rejected security official's statements and said Hussein traveled into Gaza through a hole in the border fence.

The Egyptian government suspended the activities of Hussein and his party, partly on the ground that the Labor Party has links with the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's largest opposition group. Hussein, a politician and former parliamentarian, has led several anti-government protests in the past.

Around 1.5 million Gazans are living under a heavy Israel siege for a long time and Egypt still insists on closing the only Gaza border crossing, leaving Gazans desperate to digging tunnels underground and risking their lives to obtain basic supplies.
