Gaza damage at least $1.4 billion

Thu, 15 Jan 2009 19:30:45 GMT | PressTV.ir

The Israeli war on Gaza has caused the impoverished residents of the strip at least $1.4 billion in damage to the infrastructure.

According to Palestinian experts, twenty days of non-stop attacks on Gaza has caused devastation to buildings, pipes and other infrastructure facilities. Conservative estimates put the damage at $1.4 billion.

Both Arab and Western countries will be asked to contribute in rebuilding Gaza which based on expert predictions will last at least five years, AP reported.

While it is yet unclear how the bloodshed will end, foreign ministers from France, Norway, the European Union and the International Mideast envoy are due to convene in Paris on Thursday to discuss the reconstruction process.

Hospitals, schools, Mosques and infrastructure sites have so far been the main targets of the Israeli forces.

The Al-Quds Hospital and a UNRWA building in Gaza City were also targeted earlier on Thursday.

According to UNRWA, up to 700 Palestinians were sheltered in the compound when it was hit by Israeli fire; three staff members were wounded.

Since its December 27 launch of air and sea operations against Gaza, Israel has killed at least 1,100 Palestinians and wounded more than 4,700 others -- a large number of whom are civilians.

Tel Aviv says it launched the aggression against Gaza to put an end to rocket attacks against southern Israeli towns.

Hamas, the democratically-elected ruler of the coastal sliver, demands a cessation of an 18-month Israeli blockade on the Gaza Strip before its fighters suspend the rocket attacks.
