Egypt opposition wants Gaza rearmed

Wed, 21 Jan 2009 16:58:15 GMT | PressTV

Egypt's strongest opposition has warned the government against signing any agreement with Israel that would restrict arms flow into Gaza.

Secretary-general of the opposition Muslim Brotherhood bloc in Egypt's parliament, Saad al-Husseini, said Wednesday that any involvement of Cairo in deals with Tel Aviv against the people of Gaza would bring shame on the government.

His remarks came after a senior Israeli official claimed Monday that Tel Aviv had announced a ceasefire in Gaza after Egypt and the United States promised to bring to a halt all weapon imports into the beleaguered strip.

"Israel and Egypt have reached written understandings on security arrangements to prevent arms smuggling along the Gaza-Egypt border and deeper inside the Sinai Peninsula," AFP quoted the unnamed Israeli official as saying.

Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hossam Zaki, however, denied on Tuesday the existence of such a deal.

Al-Husseini urged the Cairo government to arm the Palestinian resistance fighters in the Gaza Strip and support them against Israeli aggressions, Arabic-language TV channel Al Alam reported.

The Muslim Brotherhood blames the Egyptian government for its role in the Gaza crisis. The group has urged Cairo to resist Tel Aviv pressure and open Rafah crossing -- a common border between Egypt and Gaza -- for the flow of humanitarian aid.

Al-Husseini also criticized Egyptian media for their coverage of the 23-day Gaza war, which left more than 1,340 Palestinians dead. He accused the media of mounting a propaganda campaign against the Hamas movement -- the democratically-elected ruler of the coastal strip.

The Muslim Brotherhood staged several demonstrations to protest Israel's military campaign in Gaza waged on December 27. Hundreds of members of the group were arrested during the anti-Israeli rallies.
