UNRWA: Open Gaza crossings or brace for crisis

Wed, 21 Jan 2009 13:31:20 GMT | PressTV

International agencies warn that a full-blown humanitarian crisis is inevitable in Gaza if the borders are not fully opened to much-needed aid.

“We cannot improve [the humanitarian] situation here [in the Gaza Strip], unless they [Israelis] open all the crossing points,” Adnan Abu Hasna, a media advisor to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), told Press TV on Wednesday.

He added that although Israel had allowed some aid supplies into the Gaza Strip through the Kerm Abu Salem crossing point, it was not enough due to the situation in the densely-populated area.

According to the UN official, the Kerm Abu Salem crossing point cannot itself guarantee the flow of food and medical supplies into Gaza.

Abu Hasna said that unless Israel opens all border crossings within days nobody will be able to rebuild Gaza. He added the opening of the border crossings is required to allow materials and equipment into the tiny coastal sliver for shelters to be built for those Gazans who lost their homes during the 23-day Israeli aggression.
