'No deal can stop Hamas from rearming'

Sun, 25 Jan 2009 19:35:55 GMT | PressTV

Hamas says it will not accept any agreement which prevent the transfer of arms to the movement which 'is necessary for defending Gazans'.

A long term agreement "will kill the resistance, which is the Palestinian people's legitimate right as long as the occupation continues to exist," Ismail Radwan, a Hamas spokesman was quoted by the Yediot Ahronot as saying Sunday.

The remarks were made while a Hamas delegation is in Cairo to negotiate a lasting Egyptian-brokered ceasefire with Israel.

Osama Hamdan, a Hamas representative in Lebanon, earlier reiterated that nobody is entitled to deprive the movement from rearming.

"No one has the right to prevent the Palestinians from equipping themselves with weapons as long as the occupation continues," he said.

According to Hamdan, the movement started to rearm its fighters even during the Israeli military operation against the Gaza Strip.

One of the objectives of Israel's Operation Cast Lead was preventing arms transfer to Hamas.

Hamas took power in a democratic election in 2006; however, the West refused to deal with the group, which was later labeled as a terrorist organization by the US and some of its allies.

Israel destroyed hundreds of tunnels dug between the costal region and Egypt during its aggression in Gaza to stop arms transfer into the region.
