Militant groups prepare to fight for power in central Somalia. |
Two powerful Somali militant factions are preparing for a heavy confrontation over the control of central regions in the country.
For the last few weeks, Al-Shabaab fighters and clan based Ahlul-Sunnah Wal-Jamaa have been deploying forces in central Somalia, a Press TV correspondent reported.
On Monday, Al-Shabaab forces reportedly sent at least 50 armored vehicles with over 300 fighters to the towns of Dhusamareb and Guriel, which are currently under the control of Ahlul-Sunnah Wal-jamaa.
Dhusamareb is one of Al-Shabaab's strongholds, where the group's founder, Sheikh Aden Hashi Ayro lost his life in a US propelled missile attack in May last year.
The fighters are keen to recapture the strategic and symbolic town.
Ahlul-Sunnah Wal-Jamaa, meanwhile, accuses Al-Shabaab of targeting and killing prominent clerics in different parts of the conflict-riddled country.
