US military uses unmanned drones armed with hellfire missiles to attack Pakistan. |
An alleged US drone missile attack has killed at least five people and injured several others in troubled northwestern Pakistan.
A Press TV correspondent reported that two missiles struck a house in the town of Bannu in Pakistan's North West Frontier Province, near the Waziristan tribal region, close to the border with Afghanistan, at around 10.30 pm (1730 GMT).
The identities of those killed were not immediately known and the death toll may rise as the injured are said to be in a critical condition, sources said.
Al-Qaeda and Taliban-linked militants have been the main targets of attacks in the nearby Waziristan region and US drone attacks in Bannu are rare.
The tribal regions along the shared border between Pakistan and Afghanistan have become a safe haven for militants after a US-led invasion in late 2001 toppled the Taliban in Afghanistan and sent insurgents to areas bordering Pakistan.
Over 500 people -- suspected militants as well as civilians -- have been killed in such attacks, which started under the former Bush administration.
