US troops in Afghanistan |
Hundreds of American nationals are to join the sprawling population of US servicemen in Afghanistan aiding "the counterinsurgency operations".
The White House has pinned on the drawing the plan which has been floated by senior national security think tanks, The Washington Post
The non-military population, comprising of experts drawn from different US state-run agencies, is allegedly to aid development projects in the war-scarred country.
The move is also meant to put a civilian face on the now eight-year-old US military surge in Afghanistan. The surge's collateral damage has led to domestic and overseas outcries since its launch in 2001 under the banner of the 'war on terror'.
Commenting on the pending measure, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said, "people are coming together pretty well in terms of the strategy."
Experts have warned that the requisite reinforcements would make serious demands on the already depleted economy.
