Thai troops on patrol in Thailand's southernmost provinces where more than 3,600 people have been killed during five years of insurgency. |
Suspected separatists have killed at least four paramilitary soldiers in an ambush in troubled southern Thailand, military officials say.
The incident occurred in Pattani Province at 2:30 pm (0730 GMT) on Thursday. Insurgents triggered a roadside bomb and opened fire on the vehicle in which troops were patrolling Khapoh district, some 700 kilometers south of Bangkok.
"This was a well-planned attack," Army Colonel Prakorn Ganthalachotha said. "This district is infested with insurgents and attacks on our men are frequent."
The recent attack comes after Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva last week approved the deployment of an extra 4,000 soldiers in the deep south.
Rebels regularly target security forces and anyone suspected of collaborating with Thai authorities. Thousands of people have been killed during five years of violence in Thailand's southernmost provinces near the Malaysian border.
