A tunnel used by Palestinians to bring food and medicine into the Gaza Strip. |
Israeli aircraft have flown low over the beleaguered Gaza Strip, targeting two tunnels in the town of Rafah near the border with Egypt.
The Thursday morning incident is the latest violation of a ceasefire that Israel announced on January 18 to mark the end of three weeks of non-stop onslaught on the costal strip.
Palestinian sources in the Hamas-run territory have confirmed the attack, while Israeli officials wouldn't immediately comment on the incident. There were no reports of casualties.
Palestinians use the tunnels to bring much needed supplies, including food and medicine, into the region which has been under an Israeli-imposed blockade for 20 months.
The Israeli-imposed blockade came into effect following the takeover of Gaza by the democratically-elected government of Hamas in mid-June 2007.
The Gaza siege has been ongoing even during Tel Aviv's all-out military campaign, which left about 1,340 Palestinians dead and over 5,450 injured -- including hundreds of women and children.
The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics has reported that more than 4,100 homes have been reduced to rubble and 17,000 others have been damaged during the offensive, leaving Gazans in dire straits.
