Demonstrators condemn Israel's Gaza offensive in downtown Washington |
Thousands of people have rallied in cities across the US protesting Israel's attacks on Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
People from all walks of life and different religious backgrounds including Buddhists, Jews, Muslims and even US military veterans marched together Saturday, condemning the Israeli attacks on the Gaza strip which has killed 470 people so far.
The US protests in cities such as New York, San Francisco, Boston, Washington Louisville, California and many more have mirrored demonstrations across the globe, with tens of thousands marching against the Israeli offensive which began on December 27.
In Seattle protesters marched against the Israeli offensive waving Palestinian flags and carrying mock coffins shouting "Occupation is a crime."
Britain, Australia, Italy and even Israel itself have been the scene of angry protests calling for world leaders to put a stop to the killing in Gaza; an 'open prison' that no one is allowed in or out of by the Israeli government.
As the situation deteriorates world leaders fail to agree on the crisis. France condemned the Israeli land assault in the Gaza Strip on Saturday, just hours after the Czech presidency of the European Union described the action as "defensive, not offensive."
US President George Bush has also supported the Israeli assaults but Britain has called for and immediate ceasefire.
According to UN Permanent Palestinian observer Riyad Mansour thousands more Palestinian civilians will be killed and injured if the Israeli assault is not stopped.
"This is immoral, this is illegal, this is unacceptable, and the Security Council cannot continue to sit on its hands and not force Israel to comply with its position, the position that it adopted on Sunday morning," Mansour said.
The observer made these comments after yet another inconclusive meeting of the UN Security Council late Saturday.
In its third meeting since the conflict erupted the Security Council has failed to approve an agreement that would have asked Israel to end its lethal offensive which has claimed the lives of hundreds of Palestinians.
