Riyad Mansour, the United Nations Palestinian envoy, spoke with the media after an emergency meeting of the President of the U.N. Security Council on Saturday night |
A UN ambassador has questioned whether support for the Israeli claims that it seeks "self-defense" in Gaza contradicts Palestinian rights.
Speaking at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Saturday night after an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, the Palestinian ambassador said the current atmosphere deepens resentment and hatred and puts numerous obstacles in the way of peace.
According to Riyad Mansour, the world has failed to acknowledge the right of the Palestinian people -- the natives of the land -- to resist the Israeli occupation.
"If people talk about the right of Israel for self-defense and refer to it as an element in the Charter of the United Nations, there are also elements in the Charter of the United Nations for people under occupation to have the right for self-determination," said Masour.
"When we quote from the Charter, we should not quote in a selective way. We should quote in a comprehensive way," he advised.
Israel launched of Operation Cast Lead on Gaza on December 27. So far Israeli forces have killed nearly 500 Gazans and wounded 2790 others in the operation, a large number of whom are civilians.
"As they say that Israel has a right to self-defense, we the Palestinian people have the right to put an end to occupation and to excersise self-determination and to establish our own independent state with Jerusalem its capital living in peace next to the state of Israel," he continued.
The permanent Palestinian ambassador to the UN called for an immediate ceasefire and an end to the 18-month Israeli blockade on the Gaza Strip.
He also called for "an international force to provide security for our people and to create an appropriate objective atmosphere are the element we need".
"Israel has to stop the aggression immediately and return their forces to the place they came from before the beginning of the ground aggression," warned Mansour.
