A recent opinion poll has revealed that 79 percent of Americans oppose military action against Iran over the country's nuclear program.
“Many Israelis will be disappointed to learn that most Americans are not interested in a military operation on Persian soil,” Ynetnews website reported Thursday evening.
The Israeli website cited the results of a poll conducted by Quinlan Rosner Research on behalf of the Israel Project, a US-based non-government organization known for advocating a hardline, pro-Israeli stance in American politics.
According to the poll, 43% of Americans believe the US government should start direct negotiations with Tehran to resolve the nuclear dispute, as promised by incoming US President Barack Obama.
The Israeli-commissioned survey also found that the majority of American citizens do not support the policy of increasing diplomatic pressure on Iran or imposing harsher economic embargoes on the country over its nuclear activities.
Only 39% of the respondents said that they would favor heavier sanctions against Iran.
Pressuring Iran diplomatically also failed to win the support of more than half of those surveyed, with only 47% in agreement.
Tehran has been under Washington sanctions after the 1979 Islamic Revolution toppled a US-backed monarch in the country.
