Fire Erupts at Chemicals Plant; Resistance Even Stronger

14/01/2009 | AlmanarTV.lb

For the nineteenth consecutive day, the Palestinian Resistance seemed Wednesday as strong as in the first day of Israel's deadliest offensive against the besieged strip.

The pure blood of more than 1,000 martyrs who have fallen since the beginning of the offensive that took place amid a suspicious international silence has actually increased the resistance's strength and willingness to achieve complete victory.

On Wednesday evening, a fire broke out at the Agan Chemicals facility in Ashdod. Emergency services have been called to the scene and are trying to control the roaring flames. Magen David Adom emergency services reported of two casualties in the fire, in moderate to serious condition.

As a so-called "precautionary measure," the police instructed residents in Ashdod's northern area, as well as in the communities of Nir Galim, Bnei Darom, Neveh Herzog and the sorrounding area, to stay inside and keep all doors and windows closed.

The fire also caused a series of small explosions, which were heard in the Ashdod area. The Environmental Protection Ministry has dispatched a hazardous material team to the area.

Meanwhile, six Israeli soldiers were shot by Palestinian fighters in the Gaza Strip early on Wednesday morning, according to news reports. Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth said two were described as moderately injured, while the rest suffered only minor injuries. Three of the soldiers are reportedly officers. They were shot in clashes between soldiers and Palestinian Resistance fighters inside a building seized by the invading Israeli military in the northern Gaza Strip, the paper said.

Air raid sirens sounded Wednesday afternoon in the southern communities of Beersheba, Yavne, Ashkelon, Sderot and other western Negev towns. Rockets exploded in open areas in Beersheba, Yavne, Ashdod and the Sdot Negev Regional Council.

Meanwhile, Wednesday's rocket fire began at around 10:30 am, when two Qassam rockets exploded in open areas within the Eshkol Regional Council in southern Israel. A third rocket hit the area shortly afterwards. There were no reports of injuries or damage.

An hour later, three additional rockets exploded in open areas within the Sha'ar Hanegev Regional Council and in the Ashkelon area. There were no injuries and no damage was caused.
