Top US commander in Baghdad, General David Petraeus

General David Petraeus has been nominated to replace Admiral William Fallon, raising the possibility of yet another US war in the Mideast.

US Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who nominated Petraeus, calls him the most qualified US officer capable of overseeing military operations in the Middle East.

"I recommended him to the president because I am absolutely confident he is the best man for the job. I don't know anybody in the United States military better qualified to lead that effort," Gates explained. . . . read more
