ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (Agence France-Presse) — The African Union decided Monday to maintain its peacekeepers in Somalia for two more months, and it appealed for more countries to send troops to bolster the security force.
The decision to extend the mandate of the 3,400-member force, which had been scheduled to expire at the end of the month, was made at a meeting here of the African Union’s peace and security council.
The peacekeeping force, which deployed in Somalia in March 2007, is made up of soldiers from Uganda and Burundi, and it represents fewer than half of the 8,000 troops that had originally been intended.
