Iran's electoral watchdog, the Guardians Council, said on Tuesday it is ready to recount the elections votes in contested areas.
"If the Guardians Council reaches the conclusion that such offences as buying votes or using fake identity cards have been committed... it will order a recount," council spokesman Abbas Ali Kadkhodai told the official news agency IRNA.
Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei had ordered a probe into the vote-rigging allegations laid by Mir Hossein Mousavi. However the defeated presidential candidate on one time calls his supporters to calm down and on another time takes part in demonstrations that has seen tires, dustbin, cars and motorbikes set ablaze by rioters.
Iran’s state radio said that seven people were killed in Tehran as they attacked a military unit during a pro- Mousavi protest.
The radio also said that the demonstrators had sought to attack and vandalize government buildings and that “a military post was attacked with the intention of looting its weapons. Unfortunately, seven of our citizens were killed and a number of them injured.”
The authorities have warned that they would nip any "velvet revolution" in the bud.
"It is time for the alert Iranian people to separate from the path of those who belong to deviant and violent currents and to foil their plots," a statement by the Islamic Council for Media Coordination published on Iran’s official news agency IRNA said. The statement called for a rally against riots by pro-Mousavi supporters on Tuesday, at the same venue as where the Mousavi camp has called a gathering just one hour later.
